How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
When I say "We" have a vision, what does that mean?
So far, I will admit, it has primarily meant me and the zany woman who has agreed to tie her life to mine. I also have some wacky friends who've bought into this. But "we" has to mean more than that. My small "we" could never bring everything to the table that this vision requires.
I had the most encouraging meeting tonight that I've had yet. I met with Keith Langner, our Senior Pastor. He'd already expressed his support for our mission, but I left tonight knowing that he is completely committed. The support of our Pastor and Elders is the basis around which all the support must form.
"We" just got bigger. Keith has a vision and grasp of a part of this that I do not. Since my meeting with Nabil I've been praying and wondering about how to tackle the mountain of raising support. I'm not good at that.
We're looking at a several year commitment just to get ready for a Church plant. I didn't see how I could connect with enough Churches in this area to get that level of support. I left his office wondering if maybe we should go ahead and start packing.
The Apostle Paul was telling us, in the above passage, that missions is a team game. None of us get to revel in pride at our own contribution, but together we submit in humility to God's big "we".
That won't happen, though, if I depend on help from the well-adjusted. They're all too wise to buy into something like this. There are people in Lebanon who strap bombs to their bodies and we're sending... a chicken farmer? That makes about as much sense as sending out ignorant fishermen.
I need people who are sold out. I don't want to cart my family over to this distant and very different land if I have to depend on nice people who think missions are a good idea. That's not enough. I need a group of people who've got my back. I need to know that they are sold out to this just like me.
"We" are the Church at Lake Guntersville. We are a group of believers peculiar enough to cancel Church on Sunday morning and go out to minister to the needy. We are visionary enough to see the name of Jesus Christ carried before the Muslim world. There are no limits to our God.
